People be aware the current Immigration atmosphere in America are not just against illegal immigrants living here. Basically anyone living in the United States that is a green card holder meaning a person otherwise known as a Legal Permanent Resident. Although a person is living here legally with a green card you may not be safe to stay in the United States if you have been arrested for any minor or major criminal activity. The ICE agents are conducting a sweep to arrest anyone that has a criminal pass and you can be ordered deported by an immigration judge it does not matter how long you lived in the United States it could be 20-30-40 years or more if you are not a Naturalize Citizen your rights as a immigrant are very minute. When President Clinton signed the Immigration responsibility act bill into law back in 1996 he made the law retro-active meaning if you committed any crime prior to the law you could also subjected to deportation as well. Immigrants are being deported for a wide range of criminal infractions. If you are living in the United States for a period of 5 years and want to continue living here it is imminent to file for Naturalization so this way you can secure that you will not be taken away from your loved ones especially children that are then sent to foster homes when a relative is not available to care for them once their parent/parents is deported.
Update as of May 3, 2010 there is a new article published in the New York Times on Legal immigration. The governor of New York State (David Paterson) made an announcement that the state would accelerate consideration and beging granting pardons to legal immigrants that are being targeted by the federal government for deportation. This is great news because there is a great majority of residents is big cities such as New York are being impacted by these aggressive immigration that Bill Clinton signed into law back in 1996.
